Now is the time to register for the "Planning an Intentional Community" Weekend Workshop on July 26–28 at Camp Shehaqua.
This workshop is an opportunity to share over two years of research into establishing a Unification-inspired Intentional Community. A place where Unificationists, and other like-minded people, can build a community rooted in shared ideals. The envisioned community has private homes and rental units, as well as a Common House, a shared place for activities; yoga, cooking classes, arts & crafts, business meetings, meals, and whatever else the community decides. The Common House will serve direct community members and surrounding communities.
Living in harmony with nature is another core value so we would have garden plots or one large garden as a direct food source for the community. The target location is eastern Pennsylvania.
Much needs to be planned. This is the purpose of the July 26-38 weekend workshop at Camp Shehaqua. We have invited one of the thought leaders in this field: Diana Leafe Christian. She has studied intentional communities all over the world and written two books on the subject.
If you've ever thought about living in a community where many of your neighbors share your values, or if you are curious to find out more about practical details, then this is sure to be an enlightening and fun weekend for you. You will be able to ask all your questions and discuss your ideas with others. Also read our flyer.
It's not too late to sign up for the Shehaqua Vision Quest 2013, but we will need to hear from you soon! The Shehaqua Vision Quest is a two-week workshop created by 2nd Gen to help fellow leaders challenge themselves to grow internally. The program contains internal guidance, service, and outdoors adventure. During an intensive road-trip-style workshop, the team will live and work with various communities in New England, before concluding the trip at Shehaqua Family Camp. This year's program is directed by Oliver Noll. Dates: Sunday, July 7 – Friday, July 19.
The age requirement for participants is 14–19. Freshmen in high school can apply, though preference will be given to older students. For more information read the flyer here, and to sign up, visit www.shehaquavisionquest.com.
The 2013 Spring Gathering was a huge hit this year, with 123 people attending. We had multiple programs going on simultaneously. The young adults climbed up Glen Onoko Ridge to catch the breathtaking view of the Lehigh River while discussing what "Dare to Live," the workshop theme, means to them personally. Throughout the camp, there were multiple opportunities to play on the newly sanded volleyball court or play Frisbee in the field. We also played an epic game of capture the flag, involving three teams, two flags per team, and hand made team shirts.
Young Families enjoyed a nature hike and spending time together at the camp, while the adults had a great discussion on Saturday morning. Victor Servito gave a moving Sunday service about his personal take on what "Dare to Live" means to him. In the end, it was the time spent building friendships and renewing relationships that made Shehaqua a great experience.
Thank you to everyone for coming out, and making this an unforgettable memory together!
